Must-Have Fall Fashion Pieces: As Told by NC Boutiques

Must-Have Fall Fashion Pieces: As Told by NC Boutiques

While the weather may not totally reflect the season, it is officially Fall and I am ready! Fall is my absolute favorite time of the year – the changing leaves, the dropping temperatures, the holiday season approaching – it’s spectacular. It leaves a certain sort of magic in the air. All that being said, it should come as no surprise that my birthday is in November, so I’m a Fall baby through and through. Bring on Thanksgiving and Christmas!

On top of all the other wonderful things, Fall fashion is top-notch. The autumnal color palette is flattering on basically everyone; and, who doesn’t love chunky sweaters, leggings and boots? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I wear sweaters year-round, but now it’s seasonally appropriate! While I’m excited to break out all my Fall clothes, this year has been quite strange for dressing up. I’m feeling a bit blocked for inspiration. To reignite my passion for fashion, I talked to different North Carolina boutiques about their must-have pieces for Fall. If you’re anything like me, these suggestions will get you shopping – either online or in-person socially distanced – faster than you can say, “add that to my cart!”

Whilden – Chapel Hill

Located in the quaint shopping center at 400 S Elliott Rd., Whilden offers a unique mix of clothing, shoes and accessories. Owner, Courtney Whilden, opened the store in Fall 2016. In its short four years, Whilden has made a great name for itself in the Chapel Hill community. Whether you’re looking for a cocktail dress or a lounge outfit, Whilden has everything you could want and more!

When it comes to Fall fashion, Courtney says these are her two must-have items:

Apiece Apart Marston Pant

“I have always love wide leg pants and they are definitely trending for Fall 2020. The Slim Marston Pant by Apiece Apart has such a cool girl vibe with the ultra high waist and cropped leg. Perfect to pair with a sneaker or dress it up with a bootie.”

McGee’s Two Cents: These royal blue, corduroy pants have just enough elastic that you’ll be more than happy to wear them while working from home. Made with 98% cotton and 2% elastane, I’d even go so far as to say you should size down, so that they fit snug without the need for a belt. Relatively high-waisted, they should sit right underneath your belly button and stop right above your ankles – so you can wear any shoes you please.

Brodie Cashmere Tie Dye Cardigan

“We think this is a must have because it’s a great way to bring tie dye in for Fall fashion season and I love it in this super soft cashmere sweater coat.”

McGee’s Two Cents: Made with 100% cashmere, you will not find a more luxurious piece that wrap around yourself during the Fall and Winter months. Depending on your height, this cardigan should hit somewhere between your knee and your ankle. Not too heavy and not too thin, this is the perfect piece to layer and wear!

Vert & Vogue – Durham

Located at 353 W Main St., Vert & Vogue is a contemporary retail store. Opened in 2008 by Nadira and Ryan Hurley, Vert & Vogue brings highly-curated, thoughtfully-designed pieces to Durham, NC. In fact, in 2017, Vert & Vogue became a certified B Corporation – a certification reserved only for the most socially and environmentally conscious corporations.

According to Katie Lucas, the Marketing Manager at Vert & Vogue, these are the two must-have pieces for Fall:

No. 6 Shearling Clog Boot

“The No.6 pull on clog boot effortlessly blends comfort and style. These boots feel like slippers and socks are optional! Roll down and let the shearling show, or wear up for an extra cozy fit.”

McGee’s Two Cents: A sheepskin and cow leather exterior with a shearling interior, the No. 6 Shearling Clog is the perfect shoe for Fall and Winter. It has a 2.75 inch heel with a 1 inch platform, so you’ve got just enough boost to make you feel a bit fancy, but you can still walk very easily. Wear them as they are or roll the top down to expose a bit of shearling, these boots are perfect to dress up or down!

Rachel Comey Annin Jumpsuit

“Jumpsuits are an easy, comfortable, one-and-done look. The Annin jumpsuit from Rachel Comey is chic on it’s own or layered! Zip over a turtleneck or slip the pointed collar through a sweater and you’re good to go!”

McGee’s Two Cents: This washed black jumpsuit is made of 100% cotton, but gives off a denim sort-0f-vibe. It runs true to size, so if you want a roomier feel, I’d go for a size up. Put your favorite turtleneck or long-sleeve shirt underneath and you’ve got the perfect utilitarian look for Fall.

Rumors Vintage – Chapel Hill

Located at 106 N Graham St., Rumors Vintage is the premiere thrift boutique in Chapel Hill. Opened by Casey Longyear and Marshe Wyche in September 2013, Rumors Chapel Hill is actually the second Rumors location – the original store is in Richmond, VA. According to its website, “we buy, sell, & trade clothing daily from our customers, handpicking each item to ensure we offer a wide & varying selection of high quality clothing at starving artist prices.”

According to Casey, co-owner of Rumors, these are the two must-have Fall pieces:

Tie Back Long Sleeve Mock Neck Crop Top

“Easy transition piece to add some edge and warmth to any high waist bottoms.”

McGee’s Two Cents: These crop tops should fit quite snug to your body, so if you’re looking for something a bit roomier – go a size or two up. Perfect to layer underneath pieces (like the jumpsuit above) or pair with high waisted pants, these lightweight, long-sleeve tops are perfect for the ever-changing North Carolina weather.

Oversized Corduroy Jacket with Fuzzy Lining

“Easy way to layer keep your looks!”

McGee’s Two Cents: Corduroy is an absolute Fall staple. The perfect material to bulk up your look without sacrificing any style. This jacket includes a fuzzy lining as well, which is most likely the heaviest piece you’ll need for North Carolina weather! Since these pieces are already oversized, go with your normal size when purchasing.

Uniquities – Raleigh, Charlotte and Chapel Hill

Started in 1992 by Julie Jennings, Uniquities is a definite staple when it comes to shopping in North Carolina. With five different locations across the state, it is more than necessary to stop in when you have the chance. Specializing in women’s clothing, particularly denim, Uniquities hand-picks all the best pieces for its lovely customers.

According to Shelbie LeBron, Lead Stylist at Uniquities North Hills, these are the two must-have pieces for Fall:

Marc Jacobs Snapshot Bag

“This item is great for this Fall because it’s one size fits all! You can use it during and after quarantine.”

McGee’s Two Cents: These little crossbody bags are only about 7 inches wide by 4 inches tall; so, they’re perfect for people on the go! Made with leather, you will not need to worry about this bag facing any of the natural elements. The best part? The strap strap is both adjustable and removable – perfect for everyone!

Soia and Kyo “Coatigan”

“These are amazing. They have the feel of PJs with the look of someone who tried 😊 10/10 must-have especially in this NC Fall weather!”

McGee’s Two Cents: This Fall fashion stable combines two of my very favorite things: a coat and a cardigan! It’s a bit heavier than a cardigan, but a bit lighter than a cat – the perfect North Carolina outerwear piece. It has an open front with two pockets, so it’s perfect to throw on as you head out the door. It’s a longer length, so it should hit somewhere below your knees and above your ankles.
