Prison Policy Initiative: Studies Show that Solitary Confinement Linked to Higher Likelihood of Inmate Death

A study from UNC Chapel Hill shows inmates are more likely to die when they spend time in solitary. Previous studies have shown the negative effect solitary has on inmates. This one shows effects last long after inmates leave solitary and even prison. The study says inmates who spend any time in solitary are more likely to die. Solitary confinement leads to higher levels of death by suicide, overdose, and homicide. Wanda Bertram and Andrew Foster of Prison Policy Initiative say action needs to be taken now.
