In the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, northeast of Linville, sits one of the states' most popular tourist destinations. Grandfather Mountain, with its peak at 5,946 feet above sea level, is a true North Carolina gem. It contains some of the oldest geologic formations on earth and has nearly unmatched biodiversity.
Lead designer Michael Stevenson said in an interview that the park is important for all North Carolinians. "I think it’s important for everybody in our state to understand our history and how we got to where we are, because we’re all in it together and we’re all going somewhere."
The black bear is the only bear species found in North Carolina or anywhere in the Eastern United States. Though unprovoked attacks by black bears are extremely rare, they can become a threat if provoked or attracted by unnatural foods.
