While you should remain careful about social distancing, there are some great North Carolina resorts for your winter weekend getaway. Whether you want to hit the slopes, curl up by the fire or catch the cold ocean air, our state has you covered.

1. Sugar Mountain Ski Resort

Sugar Mountain Ski Resort is one of the most popular ski resorts in North Carolina. It’s about a three-hour drive from the Triangle, where the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway offers stunning views to visitors. Not there to ski? There’s still plenty to do, thanks to more than a dozen trails and a great shopping district nearby!

2. Appalachian Ski Mountain

Appalachian Ski Mountain is another fantastic option if you want to ski or hike the terrain. This resort also features the Midnight Blast, the only late-night skiing in North Carolina. The on-site nursery is also a bonus for families with young children.

3. Grandfather Mountain State Park

Grandfather Mountain State Park is a beautiful option for your winter weekend getaway. There’s plenty to do in Boone, and lots of trails to explore in the park. You might even see some of the endangered species and wildlife on your hike. And if you’re not looking for a serious outdoor adventure, you’ll still find scenic overlooks and even a swinging bridge along your drive to the top.

4. Between the Covers B&B

Between the Covers B & B describes itself as a literary bed and breakfast. From its long-time home in Wilmington, this adorable hideaway celebrates North Carolina’s most famous authors in style. Your stay includes a three-course breakfast and coffee all day, plus (of course) stacks and stacks of books in the library.

5. Beech Mountain Ski Resort

Beech Mountain Ski Resort is one of our residents’ favorite North Carolina resorts for winter getaways. According to Forbes, this spot is a bucket-list destination complete with ski slopes, a terrain park and more. It’s a few hours from the Triangle, but its landscape and activities are well worth the travel time.

6. Cape Hatteras

Hatteras Island is an excellent destination if you want cold ocean air this winter. Located in the Outer Banks, the island allows visitors can walk along its cape and explore the lighthouses that dot its beach. You can also charter boats and visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum for adventurous maritime fun.

7. The Cotton Gin Inn

Take a trip to the Inner Banks and stay at the Cotton Gin Inn, a newly renovated bed and breakfast inside a historic home just minutes from the waterfront. Feel free to explore six acres of brick cotton gin buildings, or sign up for the Inn’s cooking classes instead. And during the evening, spend your time strolling along the beach or sipping coffee under the magnolia trees.
